Jakob Maag Environmental analyst and communicator
Mr. Jakob Maag is an experienced project manager, scientific analyst and communicator. He has extensive national and international experience with key aspects of the management of hazardous chemicals in society. He graduated from the Technical university of Denmark as Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1991 with a specialization in environmental chemistry. Since then, he has gained waste practical experience in the field of environmental research, planning and communication as a private consultant serving the major international and regional organisations, national environment authorities and industry, among others.
Primary working fields
Integrated review and assessment of priority hazardous chemicals (all key aspects of consumption, releases, impacts, abatement measures and policy options; global reviews of mercury, lead and cadmium)
- Development of abatement strategies to reduce releases of and adverse impacts from hazardous chemicals
- Policy development and negotiation facilitation regarding hazardous chemicals management nationally and internationally
- Planning and execution of targeted risk communication of complex environmental and technical issues to selected target groups (including the wider public)
- Guideline development for assessment of consumption and releases of priority chemicals
- Substance flow assessment for hazardous substances ("SFA", "substance flow analysis"; integrated assessment of consumption, releases, exposure)
- Substitution analysis (impact assessment: applications, technical assessment, economical assessment, environmental risk assessment)
- Emission inventories
- Consumption inventories
- Hazardous waste production forecasts

Specific experience with the substances, materials and processes
Among others: Heavy metals (mercury, Hg, lead, Pb, cadmium, Cd, etc.), persistent organic pollutants ("POPs": PCB), brominated flame retardants, phthalates, chlorinated solvents, siloxanes (silicones), ODS (ozone depleting substances), industrial greenhouse gases, other PBTs (persistent bioaccumulative toxics). Forests, wood and wood-processing sector. Paper and paper-manufacturing sector. Printing materials and printing industry. Building industry and building materials.
